Tips for Backpacking to Krabi, Thailand

Since there's plenty of blogs and sites that covered all related travel stuff about Krabi, Thailand, I'm going to take different approach this time. This entry will be much more on FAQs and reviews that i think might be useful for you which you might not get from the other blogs or sites.


Anyway, if this is your first time travelling to other country, please read this useful tips; Common Tips Before Backpack Travel.

FAQ's Section
Question: I'm Malaysian. Should i get or apply VISA if i want to go to Thailand?
Answer: No.

Question: Is there a water hose or bidet in the toilet?
Answer: Yes.

Question: If i go to Krabi, should i stay at Krabi Town or Ao Nang Beach?
Answer: If you plan to have water activities, you should stay at Ao Nang Beach. But if you are looking forward to try all kind of food hunting and shopping, then the right place to stay is at Krabi Town.

Question: I'm Muslim. Is it easy to find halal food there?
Answer: Yes. You will never eat at the same place twice; because there's a lot. 😂

Question: I'm Malaysian. How to communicate with the locals?
Answer: They can speak Malay and English. So, no big deal. 😉

Question: Should i buy simcard?
Answer: Depends on your preferences. If it is important for you to stay connected with your loved ones, then go ahead. We got our simcard for THB120 which have unlimited mobile data with free calls (5 days package).

Reviews Section

1. Airport Shuttle/Private Taxi
- Category: Transportation
- Journey: Krabi Airport to/from Ao Nang (your hotel/accommodation)
- Duration: Around 30 minutes
- Airport Shuttle (air-conditioned van): THB300/pax for return trip. Great option for solo traveller. Just go straight to the counter right in front of the arrival gate and buy the ticket.
- Private Taxi: THB500/taxi per trip. Great choice if you travel in group of 4 people. We book the return ticket from the counter which located in front of international arrival gate.





2. Yellow Sun Guesthouse
- Category: Accommodation
- Location: Ao Nang Beach.
- Price: THB300/night for room with fan and THB500/night for room with air-conditioned.
- Apps: Yellow Sun Guesthouse via Booking.com
- Close/near to almost everything; cafe, restaurant, convenience shop, beach, travel agency, etc.
- The room is clean and look as advertise; each room comes with private bathroom and fridge.
- The lady who runs this place is very nice and friendly.




3. Bangboo Halal Seafood
- Category: Restaurant.
- Price: THB800 (three different dishes with drinks)
- This is one of halal restaurant at Ao Nang Beach.
- We decide to eat here because we saw there's a lot of good review for this restaurant.
- But unfortunately, it doesn't meet our expectation (we were looking into authentic spicy Thai food) and it's quite pricey too.











4. Phi Phi 7 Islands Hopping by Speed Boat
- Category: Tour Package
- Travel Agency: Sea Eagle Tour
- Price: THB800/pax excluding national park entrance fee THB400/pax (THB200 for children)
- Normal price: THB2800/pax excluding national park entrance fee.
- Timing: 8:30AM to 4:30PM.
- They will arrange the pickup/drop off from/to your hotel to/from Nopparat Thara Pier.
- They will bring you around several places; Bamboo Island, Phi Phi Leh Island, Pileh Lagoon, Maya Bay, Phi Phi Island, Viking Cave and Monkey Island.
- Snorkel gear and life jacket are inclusive.
- Halal and vegetarian buffet lunch will provided. How awesome is that? 😍
- Mineral water is supplied onboard. And on our way back, they also serve us with cold and juicy watermelon and pineapple.
- Please tip them if you enjoy the trip.


5. Krabi Night Market
- Category: Transportation
- Chartered vehicle via Travel Agency: THB200/pax for return trip. Almost all travel agency at the roadside actually provide this service. However, the trip from Ao Nang to Krabi Town starts from 6:00PM onwards.
- Songthaew (their local bus - a custom converted truck): THB50/pax one way (THB60/pax one way after 6:00PM). 30 minutes intervals between buses. Just wait at the bus station. Just hop on if you are from Ao Nang and they will ask for payment when you reach Krabi Town. But if you are from Krabi Town, they will ask the payment before you board.





6. Krabi Night Market/Walking Street
- Category: Tourist Attraction
- This is one of the must visit place if you travel to Krabi.
- There's a lot of street foods, souvenirs and also performances from the locals.
- The night market only open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.




7. Dim Sum @Krabi Night Market
- Category: Street Food
- Price: THB20 for 4/5 dim sum.
- This is one of our favourite dim sum of all times.
- The gravy/sauce compliment the taste.
- We'll definitely gonna come again just to bought this dim sum.


We already ate half of it, then only we remember that we didn't take the picture yet. 😂

8. Grilled Squid @Krabi Night Market
- Category: Street Food
- Price: THB120 per squid (price may be vary depending on the size)
- Still can't forget the taste of this grilled squid dipped into their sauce/gravy (spicy yet so good).
- Reasonable price with a fresher and bigger squid compared to other stalls/vendors.



9. Rzarn Halal Food
- Category: Stalls
- Price: THB180 (three different dishes)
- Location: Nearby Krabi Night Market.
- We decided to stop by and have our dinner there after strolling/wandering around at Krabi Night Market.
- The foods taste better than Bangboo Halal Seafood and it's also very cheap despite of what we ordered.



10. Thai Pancake
- Category: Street Food.
- Price: THB30 to THB50 (depending on the flavour).
- One of must try street food if you come to any part of Thailand.
- The most famous pancake flavour is Banana Chocolate/Nuttela.
- It taste similar to our Malaysian Roti Pisang (Roti Canai), but is very crispy and savoury at the same time.



11. Ice Cream Roll
- Category: Street Food
- Price: THB80.
- There's a lot of flavour that you can choose from.
- This is also one of must try street food if you come to Thailand.

14. Ao Nang Muslim Street
- Category: Tourist Attraction
- This street actually located along the Ao Nang Mosque.
- It is famous for halal foods.


15. Kerabu Maggi @Ao Nang Muslim Street
- Category: Street Food
- Price: THB100.
- Actually, i'm not the fan of Kerabu Maggi.
- But i saw there's one blog recommend this Kerabu Maggi at Ao Nang Mosque. Since our trip is more on gastronomical experiences, we didn't see any reason not to try.
- And.. we make a very wise decision. It's delicious. 😍

16. Mineral Water
- Category: Drinks
- Since our accommodation doesn't provide mineral water/water dispenser, we need to buy it.
- The price range for 1.5 litre mineral water is THB13 to THB20 at Family Mart.
- But you can get two 1.5 litre mineral water for THB20 at 7 Eleven (promotion).


17. Ploychompoo Thaifood
- Category: Restaurant
- Price: THB340 (three different dishes).
- We had our late breakfast here since it's pretty close to our accommodation.
- The food is good and it's price is pretty reasonable for the foods that we ordered.



18. Pad Thai
- Category: Street Food
- Price: THB60 each.
- One of the common street food at Krabi.
- It look like fried kuey teaw (the one we had in Malaysia) but taste a little bit different (in a good way). 😊


19. Mango Sticky Rice
- Category: Street Food
- One of the signature Thailand street food.
- We bought it for THB80 at Ao Nang Beach. Regardless of the price, it taste good! *drolling*
- You can get this for cheaper price; THB40 at Krabi Night Market.

20. Coconut Ice Cream
- Category: Street Food
- Price: THB50 with unlimited toppings.
- You should try this one too!



21. Breakfast Stall
- Category: Stall
- Price: THB130 (two different dishes)
- Location: next to Family Mart.
- They have lots of choices for breakfast. You can also eat there.


22. Ao Nang Street Food Stalls
- Category: Stall
- Location: in-front of Krabi Resort.
- There's a lot of foods to choose from; from snacks, drinks to rice.

22. Thai Tea
- Category: Souvenir
- So there you are looking for the famous thai tea as souvenirs.
- You can find it at almost all street markets/vendors, but there's a catch!
- It is much more cheaper by three times if you bought it at supermarket. 😂
- The small packet will cost you around THB35 while the bigger packet is THB70.


23. Pouches/Bags
- Category: Souvenir
- Bags: THB100
- Pouches x 4: THB80
- Almost all market have same price.

24. BigPay
- Category: Prepaid MasterCard
- Family Mart: No minimum purchase
- 7 Eleven: Minimum THB300
- Mother Marche Supermarket: Minimum THB100
- This is my first attempt using BigPay outside Malaysia. You can read the entry about BigPay here; BigPay: What about it?.
- The currency rate conversion is as advertised, but it will take around 1 day to settle the payment. So, in between that, it might settle for the higher rate.
- There's a lot of places that accept VISA/MasterCard, but most of the them have minimum amount or even charged 3% for credit/debit/prepaid card charges.
